Microsoft security essentials not in tray

The box in the task bar preferences is NOT ticked. I tried ticking it and then unticking it again - no change. I can run the program again from the start menu - The resultant window looks perfectly normal and everything is shown as running fine. In reply to Mike Hall Mike, How is a user suppose to know if a virus has disabled Defender if you do not show it in the system tray without constantly checking Action Center?
